The renovated airport in Amalfi will open this month

The only airport on the Amalfi Coast, one of Italy's most popular tourist destinations, Salerno Costa d'Amalfi, is reopening this month after renovations.

With the renovation of the 98-year-old Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport, located on the Amalfi Coast, a tourism paradise south of Naples, Italy, air travel to the region will resume.

Surrounded by cliffs and featuring colorful houses built on these cliffs, the Amalfi Coast attracts approximately five million tourists annually.

Although the coastal region is dreamlike, travelers had to first fly to Naples airport. From there, the journey involved taking trains and buses to reach the area.

This decision will make it easier to access the UNESCO World Heritage-listed holiday destination.

Scheduled passenger flights are expected to begin in mid-July.

How to reach the Amalfi Coast in 2024?

This year, travelers will be able to reach the Amalfi Coast via the newly opened transportation hub.

Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport is located 45 kilometers southeast of the city of Amalfi. Built in 1926, the airport has served as a military airfield, flight school, fire station, and private airport over the years.

Although modifications were made to open the airport for commercial flights in 2007, it was completely closed in 2016. From July onwards, it will open to international flights.

Work is ongoing to extend the runway and complete a passenger terminal by 2027.

Which airlines will fly to the Amalfi Coast in 2024?

On July 11, Spanish airline Volotea will start commercial flights from Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport (QSR).

The company has already announced four routes connecting the coastal region to Cagliari, Verona, and Catania in Italy, as well as Nantes in France.

Flights to Nantes and Cagliari are scheduled to begin in July, while flights to Verona and Catania are expected to start in September.

UK-based EasyJet also plans direct flights from Salerno Costa d'Amalfi to airports such as London Gatwick and Basel.

Officials predict that growth will continue until 2043, by which time the airport is expected to handle approximately six million passengers annually.

The project has been welcomed by tourism and hospitality businesses along the coast. However, there are some concerns about the impact of the increased number of visitors on the region's infrastructure and natural environment.
