Heatstroke can cause coma

In Antalya, where the 4th Regional Directorate of Meteorology warned about a temperature of 45 degrees, the dry and burning weather started to show its effect from the morning hours. While the streets and avenues of the tourism city of Antalya are only for tourists, it was seen that very few people came to the beaches on the world-famous Konyaaltı Beach. Specialist Dr. Elif Sarıönder Gencer, from Memorial Antalya Hospital Interventional Neurology Department, stated that they have seen the symptoms of heat stroke in many people who have come to the hospital due to the high temperatures recently, and said, "While there are simple symptoms such as mild heat, mild sunstroke, weakness, concentration problem or meaningless speech at the beginning, this heat stroke can lead to epileptic seizures and coma when it increases."

Symptoms of heatstroke
Giving information about those who are exposed to heat stroke, Gencer said, "When you cannot maintain body temperature, excessive body temperature increase can cause serious symptoms, especially in the elderly and children with chronic diseases. Those with sweating disorders, heart patients, can apply to the hospital with serious complaints because they cannot cool their bodies. The first symptoms are hot and dry skin. Extreme temperatures can cause concentration disorders and thirst, which can lead to a change in consciousness. If people in the risk group cannot protect themselves by being exposed to high heat and do not stay away from the heat, if they do not take enough fluids, it can cause loss of consciousness, seizures, and coma. Brain swelling and coma are one of the most dangerous symptoms of heat stroke.

"Heat stroke can cause coma"
Underlining that living organisms can work healthily in a certain temperature range, Gencer said, "We are composed of protein, just as our sensitive organs, organs such as nose and ears can freeze and irreversible tissue damage, which we call necrosis, can occur at temperatures below a certain degree, the same happens in heat.
The textures are really cooking. The most sensitive area is the brain, and when exposed to extreme heat, brain functions deteriorate. In the beginning, there are simple symptoms such as mild heat, mild sunstroke, weakness, concentration problem or meaningless speech, but when this heat stroke increases, it can go to epileptic seizures and coma.

Warnings to those working outdoors
Mentioning that people working outdoors must be protected from the sun, Gencer said, "In many jobs in the tourism region of Antalya, waiters, courier and construction workers work in open areas. They must work with protective equipment from the sun and heat, with equipment such as hats and glasses, take fluids frequently, and consume plenty of water. They need to shorten the time they stay in the heat and cool themselves. We recommend those who will go to the sea not to be exposed to direct sun between 11:00 and 16:00, when the sun is at its hottest. "We must be more careful on days when the average temperature rises above 45 degrees."
