The restoration has been ongoing at Tokat Castle for 15 years

Tokat Castle, renowned for its historical significance as the place where Vlad the Impaler, also known as Dracula, the Voivode of Wallachia, was allegedly held captive for four years in the 15th century, stands out as a unique structure that has inspired films and novels. Aybike Gamze Gazioğlu, a historical researcher, mentioned that due to the restoration works initiated in 2009, the gates of the castle have been closed with chains. She stated, 'The castle where Dracula was held captive is in Tokat. We await the completion of the restoration, marked by a statue of Fatih with Dracula's head, to reopen this castle.'

Despite 15 years passing since the restoration efforts began, Tokat Castle, which gained prominence for its association with Dracula, remains closed to visitors due to the lack of progress in the restoration works. People continue to wait for the day when this historic castle will reopen.

"The place where Dracula was held captive is Tokat Castle."

Emphasizing that Vlad the Impaler, the son of the ruler of the Principality of Wallachia, was held captive in Tokat Castle and that the legend of Dracula originated from there, historical researcher Aybike Gamze Gazioğlu stated, "We are at Tokat Castle, where the son of the prince of the Wallachian province, Vlad the Impaler, also known as Kazıklı Voyvoda, was held captive. As you know, he grew up in the same palace as Fatih Sultan Mehmet Han. And as a result of betrayal, he was imprisoned in these dungeons. There are passages beneath these dungeons. When Fatih Sultan Mehmet Han brought Kazıklı Voyvoda Vlad the Impaler here, he did not take him directly to the city. It is said that he wandered around the city using these caves and passages. The castle where Vlad Dracula was held captive is in Tokat. This man has been the inspiration for vampire movies, stories, and novels. The reason for this inspiration is that he impaled the Turkish ancestors who lived at that time and drank their blood. As a result, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Han took his head and paraded it in Istanbul.

Due to the restoration works ongoing for 8 years at Tokat Castle, we are unable to access the castle. When we come, we see the gates chained. We demand the restoration to start and finish as soon as possible. I appeal to the General Directorate of Foundations, the Ministry of Tourism, and the relevant authorities in this field. Our history is the history of Fatih, the history of the Ottoman Empire. We want our history to be preserved. Count Dracula was held captive in Tokat Castle. We are protecting our history, and we are a strong nation with our history, and we will continue to be strong."

Gazioğlu emphasizes that Tokat Castle has a unique feature worldwide and stresses the need to pay the price for the harm done to ancestors by Dracula being held captive there. Citizens, who want the restoration to be completed as soon as possible, demand that this historical structure be made more prominent worldwide.
