While Turkey is increasing its share in world cruise tourism,
According to the data of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure General Directorate of Maritime Affairs, the number of cruise ships berthed at Turkish ports in the first 5 months of this year increased by 43 percent to 279, while the number of passengers increased by 114 percent to 299 thousand 377 in the same period.
Evaluating the developments in the sector to AA correspondent, Royal Caribbean Turkey Representative and Sunorama Cruises General Manager Alper Taşkıranlar said that 60 million tourists are expected to Turkey this year.
Taşkıranlar pointed out that an income of approximately 933 dollars per person is expected from tourism; "This year, 3 million passengers will be served with 1300 cruise ships, and with the increasing interest in cruise tourism, 90 percent occupancy on the ships is expected this year. In 2024, the number of tourists interested in cruises is expected to double."
Pointing out that the tourists coming to Turkey with cruise ships have a very high contribution to the country's economy, Taşkıranlar stated that they expect the number of tourists coming by cruise ships to double next year.
Taşkıranlar stated that they bring mostly American, Canadian and Mexican tourists to Turkey, and there are also passengers from Europe, South America, Japan and China.
Drawing attention to the increasing interest of domestic tourists in cruise tourism, Taşkıranlar said, "There is an increase in the demands from Turkey before the 9-day Eid al-Adha holiday.
Approximately 1000 of our guests will travel to Mediterranean, Northern Europe, England, Iceland and Alaska destinations as a package with an airplane departing from Istanbul."
"Due to the intense interest, we also revised our Turkish passenger target"
Özgü Alnıtemiz, Celestyal Cruises Turkey Director and Caravan Tourism Cruise Director, pointed out that the eyes are more focused on Turkey in world cruise tourism and said that they will organize a total of 104 cruises to Kuşadası Port this season.
Expressing that they will carry a total of 120 thousand passengers in the season, Alnıtemiz said that they are making mainly Aegean and Mediterranean programs.
Alnıtemiz stated that they hosted guests from 140 countries, mainly American, European and Australian, on the ships, and said:
"Due to the intense interest, we have revised our Turkish passenger target this season. We aim to host 20 thousand Turkish passengers on 104 ships throughout the season. Our country is surrounded by seas on three sides and has a coastline on the world's most important seas. Its location is very valuable in terms of crossing the straits between the continents. From the point of view of our economy, one of the sectors that will feed us the most is cruise tourism. We are in the heart of the most preferred Mediterranean destination in the world. An Aegean and Mediterranean program without Turkey is unthinkable. With the right decisions and policies, it is possible to make our country the apple of the eye of world cruise tourism."
Alnıtemiz stated that one of the most important reasons why domestic tourists prefer cruise travel is that the cruise package prices provide an advantage despite the fluctuations in the currency and the high prices in the hotels.
"6 out of 10 people prefer a cruise holiday again"
MSC Cruises Turkey Marketing Coordinator İrem Bayar stated that they have already reached the pre-Kovid-19 epidemic numbers both at home and abroad this year.
Emphasizing that cruise tourism awareness has increased compared to previous years, Bayar said:
"The Eid-al-Adha holiday has been one of the most important dates for us as it has affected the entire tourism industry. Currently, we do not have any available rooms on our ships. According to our research, 6 out of 10 people who have experienced cruise travel once prefer a cruise holiday again. With the increasing number of cruise passengers, we are also improving our regional strategies. In line with the demands we have received, in 2024, in addition to the ports of Istanbul and Kuşadası, we will carry out expeditions from Bodrum port."
