The Spanish-British aviation giant IAG is poised to be the largest buyer of Airbus A321 XLR this year. The company, owner of Iberia and Aer Lingus, hopes to gain an advantage over its competitors in Europe.
The first A321 XLR has been on Airbus' assembly line since December 2023. The manufacturer plans to deliver the aircraft in the third quarter of 2024. More aircraft deliveries are expected by the end of the year. Guillaume Faury, the CEO of the company, stated, "We will deliver a handful of aircraft this year," regarding the long-range version of the A321 Neo.
International Airlines Group (IAG) is expected to be the largest XLR buyer in 2024. The Spanish-British aviation giant announced its expectation of delivering three aircraft in 2024 when it disclosed its fiscal year 2023 expectations. IAG stated, "The delivery of three Airbus A321 XLRs in 2024 will allow us to expand our network at low costs using our geographic advantage and gain a competitive edge over our European competitors."
In reality, the first A321 XLR was reportedly seen in Hamburg, likely for Aer Lingus, an Irish subsidiary of IAG, which will probably be the first operator. The model was explicitly mentioned for Iberia, a Spanish subsidiary, in the annual report. The statement included, "Iberia: Opportunities for the use of A321 XLR in selected regions and secondary cities."
IAG has placed orders for 14 Airbus A321 XLRs scheduled for delivery between 2024 and 2026. Additionally, the company has taken options for an additional 14 aircraft. Airline companies Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus, Vueling, and Level are part of this consortium.
Airbus is currently in the final stages of the certification process for the aircraft. Airbus CEO Faury mentioned that they are busy completing the documents, which amount to "thousands." The aircraft manufacturer previously had to redesign the central additional tank of the XLR to ensure fire safety.
The impact of these corrections on the range and other performance characteristics of the A321 XLR is not yet clear. According to Airbus, there will be no significant impact. The manufacturer has received orders for more than 550 aircraft. Finally, Qantas recently added eight more orders to increase its order to 28 XLRs.
