The first quarter performance of Istanbul's airports has been announced

In the first quarter of the year, 27.1 million passengers flew from airports in Istanbul. As global air traffic, which had declined since the onset of the pandemic, began to rise in 2023, this trend continued into the first quarter of 2024, with a significant increase in both flight frequencies and passenger numbers.

According to information from the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMİ), the rise in air traffic and passenger density observed in 2023 persisted in the first quarter of this year, following a substantial decrease during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was determined that the number of passengers at Istanbul and Sabiha Gökçen airports increased compared to the same period in 2023. These increases in passenger numbers positively impacted the financial performance of airlines. With the arrival of the tourism season, further increases are expected in the coming months.

During the first three months of this year, Istanbul Airport hosted a total of 17,671,971 passengers. Within this period, 3,558,813 passengers traveled on domestic flights, while 14,113,158 passengers traveled on international flights.

In the same period last year, Istanbul Airport served 16,237,909 passengers. This year, the number of passengers increased by 1,434,062, representing a 9% increase.

At Sabiha Gökçen Airport, a total of 9,432,083 passengers flew during the first quarter, with 4,294,968 on domestic flights and 5,137,115 on international flights. Compared to the first quarter of 2023, which saw a total of 7,728,044 passengers, there was a 22% increase, with 1,704,039 passengers more this year.

Overall, Istanbul's two airports served a total of 27,104,054 passengers in the first quarter of this year, compared to 23,965,953 in the same period last year, representing an increase of 3,138,101 passengers or 13%.

There was also a noticeable increase in the number of flights operated in line with the increased passenger traffic. At Istanbul Airport, a total of 120,148 flights were operated during the first quarter, consisting of 26,435 domestic and 93,713 international flights. This marked an increase of 6,308 flights or 6% compared to the same period last year, during which a total of 113,840 flights were operated.
